Draw fingerprint icon using the Polar Grid Tool

In this tutorial, we'll draw a fingerprint icon using the Polar Grid tool in Adobe Illustrator. This is an intermediate level tutorial.

To begin, open a new document: File Menu > New.
Next, go to Edit > Preferences > Units and select pixels. Click OK.

From the Drawing Tools panel, double click on the Polar Grid icon.

Enter the width and height. For this example we're using 100 x 100 pixels.
Enter the number 7 in the Concentric Dividers field, Skew 0%.
Enter the number 0 in the Radial Dividers field.
Leave 'Create Compound Path From Ellipses' and 'Fill Grid' unchecked.
Click OK.

You should see an object on your art board similar to this:

With the object selected, go to the Object Menu and select Ungroup (Shift + Control/Command + G).
With everything still selected, go to the Stroke Windowand enter a Weight of 1.

With the Direct Selection Tool (A), select the bottom right of the circle...

Now, cut (Control/Command X) the selection.

Next, from the Edit Menu, select Paste In Front.

With the object selected, go to the Object Menu and select Hide.

Now your object should look like this:

Next, with the Direct Selection Tool (A), select the bottom of the circle and delete it. Your object should look like this:

From the Object Menu, select Show All (Alt /Option+ Control/Command +3).

With the previously hidden object still selected, double-click on the Selection Tool (V) to open the Move dialog box.

Enter -50 in the Horizontal field, 0 in the Vertical field and hit OK.

Your image should look like this:

Now, with the Direct Selection Tool (A), carefully select the 4 outer half circles on top and delete them.

 Now, your image should look like this:

Select the top half circle:

Double click on the Reflect Tool (O) and select the Horizontal Axis radio button. Click Copy.

You should see this:

With this object still selected, double-click on the Selection Tool (V) to open the Move dialog box.

Enter 25 in the Vertical field, 0 in the Horizontal field and hit OK.

Now, with the object still selected, go to the View Menu, select Guides > Make Guide (Control/Command +5). Be sure that Show Guides is selected:View > Guides > Show Guides (Control/Command +;).

Next, select the Scissors Tool (C) from the Tools Panel.

Carefully click on each line segment along the lower half of the object.

Zoom in and use the guide for reference.

When you're done, it should look like this:

Next, use Scissors Tool (C) to delete sections of each path.

Join any overlapping anchor points by selecting the paths and click Object > Path > Join (Control/Command +J).

Your icon should look like this:

From the Stroke Window, customize the look of your icon. In this example we use a stroke Weight of 2.5 and Round Caps:

Go to Object > Path > Outline Stroke to change the stokes into a shape.
Next, go to Object > Path > Group to combine the shapes into one group.
